Glendale is a city located in Maricopa County, Arizona. According to 2005 Census Bureau estimate report, the population of the city was 239,435. An earlier census in the year 2000 estimated that there were 218,812 people, 75,700 households and 54,352 families residing in the city.
Glendale is the home to the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals formerly played at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in nearby Tempe, and in 2006 began playing at University of Phoenix Stadium. The stadium is scheduled to host Super Bowl XLII in 2008.
In addition, the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes and NLL's Arizona Sting began playing here when Jobing.com Arena, formerly the Glendale Arena, opened in December 2003. Also, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is played in Glendale at the University of Phoenix Stadium, which opened in August 2006. Glendale is also the home to the family of the 2007 American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks.
Glendale is home to the Glendale Community College as well as the very popular Arrowhead Towne Center mall located in the northwest part of the city. Furthermore, a newly built outdoor supply store called Cabela's is located near the new Cardinals Stadium. Transportation news includes an extension of the Valley Metro light rail transit line sometime in 2011.
