Mesa was founded in January 1878 by Mormon pioneers and its population is still roughly one-tenth Mormon. Mesa is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona and is the third-largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson. Mesa is one of the United States' fastest-growing cities, and currently ranks as the 41st-largest cities. The city's population according to the 2004 census report was estimated to be 442,780 as well as reporting that there were 146,643 households and 99,863 families residing in the city.
Points of interest in Mesa would include the Carson/Westwood Aquatics Complex, Mesa Arts Center, Mesa Amphitheater, Mesa Arizona Temple which is a large LDS temple where an elaborate Easter Pageant is held every spring. There are some very great museums located in Mesa such as the Arizona Museum for Youth, Commemorative Air Force Aircraft Museum, Mesa Historical Society and Museum, Mesa Southwest Museum and the Sirrine House. Mesa is also the home of the Chicago Cubs major league baseball team during spring training season at Hohokam Stadium. Golfers can enjoy Dobson Ranch Golf Course which is an 18-hole championship golf course featuring mature landscaping and large greens. There are three shopping malls located in Mesa which are the Superstition Springs Center, the Fiesta Mall and the Mesa Riverview. All have great stores such as JC Penny, Dillards, Sears and Macy's to list a few. The Riverview mall is the newest of the three and consists of 1.3 million square feet of retail and numerous restaurants.
Public transportation is provided by Valley Metro currently with buses running Monday through Saturday. Mesa will eventually be connected in the Valley Metro light rail project scheduled to open in 2008. Air service in the city is provided by two airports, Falcon Field which is located in the northeastern part of the city and Williams Gateway Airport which is located in the far southeastern area of the city. Williams Gateway Airport provides limited alternate air service to Sky Harbor International Airport. Williams Gateway Airport was formerly the Williams Air Force Base that closed in 1993.
Mesa is home to Mesa Community College which is the largest of the Maricopa Community Colleges and enrolls over 22,000 full and part time students. In addition, the Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University lies in southeast area of Mesa.
