Valle, Arizona

The city of Tempe was incorporated on November 29, 1894 and is located in Maricopa County, Arizona. Tempe has a population of roughly 161,143 people according to a 2005 Census Bureau estimate. The Census Bureau also reported that there are 63,602 households and 33,645 families residing in the city which makes Tempe the most densely-populated city in the state. Darrell Duppa is most notably credited with suggesting the name Tempe in 1879 as well as giving Phoenix it's name 11 years prior. Tempe is a major suburb of Phoenix and is located immediately to the southeast. The completion of Roosevelt Dam in 1911 guaranteed there would be enough water to meet the ever growing needs of Valley farmers from the early 20th century to the present day.

You can visit the Tempe Historical Museum to learn about the development of Tempe, or stop by the ASU Art Museum which are both free of charge. Open during the summer months, Big Surf is a water park with swimming, water slides and fun for people of all ages. Tempe is known for hosting one of the nation's largest New Year's Eve parties each year in downtown Tempe on Mill Avenue. In addition, the city of Tempe is the spring training host city for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Tempe is also the home of Arizona State University, one of the state's three major universities.

Family fun can also be had at Kiwanis Park. It's a great park with a recreation center that includes volleyball, tennis, racquetball, baseball and softball batting cages and an indoor wave pool with a water slide. You can go shopping at Arizona Mills Mall which has 175 stores, a Harkins Luxury 24 Cinemas, IMAX Theatre, GameWorks and many restaurants.

A major attraction in Tempe is Tempe Beach Park which was completed in 1931 and renovated in 1999. The Salt River in the northern part of Tempe was dammed in two places to create Tempe Town Lake. You can rent a boat, fish, play or attend a concert or special event at Tempe Town Lake and Tempe Beach Park. The park has approximately 5 miles of paths for bicyclists, joggers, walkers and roller bladers that circle the Town Lake. Take a fun excursion cruise called the “Rio Salado Cruise" to relax and enjoy the area. There is also a small marina on the northern shore. Tempe Town Lake is stocked numerous times throughout the year with largemouth bass, crappie, tilapia, carp, sunfish and channel catfish during the summer, and rainbow trout in the winter.

All you golf lovers can pay golf at Ken McDonald Golf Course, a par 72 municipal course, or Rolling Hills Golf Course which has two executive nines. Both are great bargains.
